Cross-Platform Process Synchronization & AST Diagnostics for AI Coding Agents

Engineered non-signalling Win32 process probing, AST static analysis privacy guards, POSIX path normalization, and cross-platform filesystem parity on Windows Python 3.12 for AI agent memory systems.

Key Engineering Deliverables
  • •Path Normalization Guard (PR #228, Issue #214): Normalized native Windows backslash delimiters to POSIX invariants for LLM tooling APIs using ntpath OS-emulation on Linux CI runners.
  • •Win32 Process Probing (PR #215, Issue #212): Engineered non-signalling process probing using ctypes and WaitForSingleObject, defending against Windows 259 (STILL_ACTIVE) exit-code traps.
  • •AST Static Analysis Guard (PR #207, Issue #205): Built Python AST inspection regression tests verifying diagnostic modules never expose internal tracker issue links to public GitHub.
  • •Native Windows 3.12 Triage (Issue #169): Triaged 4,000+ test suites under native Windows 11, isolating missing os.fchmod symbols and verifying atomic UTF-8 Unicode write fidelity.

PR #228Issue #214OS Internals
Cross-Platform Path Normalization Guard

Palinode's core storage mechanism and MCP layer rely on canonical POSIX relative paths. On Windows, os.path.relpath natively returns paths with backslashes (\), which broke strict cross-platform invariants when surfaced to agents or database stores.

•
Centralized POSIX Normalization: Updated to_rel_path to reliably replace all Windows backslashes with POSIX forward slashes after relative resolution, ensuring strict API parity.
•
Cross-Platform OS Emulation in Testing: Implemented tests using ntpath (via monkeypatching os.path) to ensure Windows-specific path semantics are rigorously tested on Linux CI runners.
•
Widened Type Safety: Migrated the core path function to support os.PathLike[str] inputs using os.fspath(), while strictly rejecting out-of-contract types like None.
•
Refactoring & Cleanup: Removed brittle string-stripping logic, routing all path translations safely through the hardened canonical helper.
Maintainer Code Review

"Merged — thank you, and thank you especially for the ntpath test. I reverted the normalization on a scratch copy to check it and your test failed, which is the whole point... That is the part of this PR still earning its keep in a year."

PR #215Issue #212OS Internals
Win32 Non-Signalling Process Probing & Safe Worktree Cleanup

When cleaning up stale agent git worktrees, checking process existence with os.kill(pid, 0) inadvertently mapped to CTRL_C_EVENT on Windows, terminating active agent processes or callers sharing console groups.

•
Kernel Synchronization Probing: Used ctypes.WinDLL("kernel32", use_last_error=True) to open process handles with PROCESS_QUERY_LIMITED_INFORMATION | SYNCHRONIZE and probed kernel object states via WaitForSingleObject(handle, 0).
•
Eliminated STILL_ACTIVE Trap: Rejected naive GetExitCodeProcess spec which fails if a process legitimately exits with status 259 (STILL_ACTIVE).
•
Thread-Safe Error Capture: Replaced GetLastError() with ctypes.get_last_error() to prevent runtime overwrites in thread-local storage.
•
Fail-Safe Invariants: Preserved security invariants where ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (5) safely resolves to True (preventing accidental deletion of elevated worktrees).
•
Pinned Regression Coverage: Authored test_pid_alive_exit_code_259_dead explicitly verifying process liveness for exit code 259.
Maintainer Code Review

"This is strong work and I want to name the best decision in it... You didn't take the issue's suggestion to read the exit code, and you were right not to... test_pid_alive_exit_code_259_dead spawns exactly that case and pins it."

PR #207Issue #205AST Analysis
Static Analysis Guard & Privacy Leak Prevention in Diagnostics

Palinode's doctor diagnostic tool contained check outputs referencing internal private issue tracker numbers (#169, #170) which auto-hyperlinked to unrelated public GitHub issues.

•
Sanitized Diagnostic Checks: Stripped internal private issue references across all check modules in palinode/diagnostics/.
•
AST Static Analysis Guard: Authored a static analysis regression test in tests/test_diagnostics.py that parses the Python Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) of all diagnostic functions.
•
Enforced Invariants: Statically verified that no diagnostic check function returns linked_issue or matches bare issue number regexes, preventing future leaks.
•
Regression Prevention: Integrated test_diagnostics.py into the automated test pipeline to guard future rule contributions.
Maintainer Code Review

"Merged directly by maintainer and recognized for proactive test design using static AST inspection."

Issue #169MilestonePlatform Parity
Native Windows Python 3.12 Triage & Fallback Verification

Untested POSIX filesystem assumptions (file permissions, UTF-8 CJK atomicity, temporary file cleanup, os.fchmod availability) caused potential friction on native Windows Python 3.12.

•
Comprehensive Test Suite Triage: Executed and analyzed 4,000+ unit and integration tests on native Windows 11.
•
os.fchmod Missing Symbol Fallback: Verified that Palinode's atomic write pipeline catches AttributeError gracefully on Windows without leaking .tmp buffers.
•
UTF-8 CJK & Unicode Parity: Verified byte-for-byte fidelity when overwriting memory files with accented characters, emojis, and CJK text (café, crème brûlée, 日本語, 汉字).
•
Issue Closure & Follow-ups: Provided reproducible test receipts, leading to maintainer closure of #169 and reservation of follow-up systems issues.
Maintainer Code Review

"Maintainer closed #169 and reserved Issues #212 and #214 for @Kaap10 based on triage quality and execution receipts."
